Bácsalmási Hunyadi János Gimnázium
Our school is called Hunyadi János Secondary Grammar School. It is a state school where students can learn from the age of 12 till the age of 18. At the end of the 12th year the pupils take the final exam, after which they can continue their studies at a university or college.
The school was founded in September 1953. Education started with two classes then. The first students got their certificate of secondary education in Bácsalmás in 1957.
The school building is located in the centre of Bácsalmás next to a nature reserve called Kossuth Park. Opposite this school the local primary school can be found.
Our school is a two-storey building with well equipped classrooms, physics, biology and chemistry laboratories and an IT classroom. Among the facilities we should mention the library, the canteen, the students’ hostel and the sports facilities: the sports hall, tennis court, outdoor volleyball court and the athletics centre, which was newly constructed and inaugurated in 2017.
Our school is a small one with about 290 students. We regularly take part in educational expos where our headteacher, Mr András Márai describes our school to those interested. Our slogan is:
Small school with great spirit.
As for education the students in our school learn to be able to take the final exam either at intermediate or advanced level. They can opt for extra lessons in different subjects in the last two years of their education. Any student can attend a study circle in the afternoon and take part in competitions and research work. They can also learn Russian and Serbian /Croatian apart from the two compulsory languages: English and German. Education in small groups makes it possible to develop children’s personality, to create family atmosphere in the lessons and to help them choose the most suitable career.
The ten best students in the school are given a monthly scholarship by the local government during the school year. In this way students are encouraged to do their best in their studies.
There are several opportunities in our school to do sport. We can go skating and skiing in winter, swimming, hiking and rowing in summer. We can play ballgames in the afternoon and also do exercise in the gym.
We regularly organize study trips, theatre visits, summer camps. There are class trips, three-day camps at Lake Balaton in autumn and excursions abroad. We have an exchange school in Backnang, Germany.
To spend free time in a useful way, there are different opportunities in our school. There is a fancy-dress party, a talent show, different celebrations and balls, concerts, music afternoons every year. You can sing in the school choir, take part in editing the school magazine.
